Active Rain Running Challenge June 12

Another cool morning for a run and not much time to complete it. Today I barely made the 20 minute run before heading off to swim lessons with my kids.

Isn't this job amazing? I can get up, go on a run, and join my kids for swim lessons on a Thursday morning. Speaking of swim lessons, today was monumental as my girl advanced to eels and my boy is no longer in the parent/child swim lessons at the YMCA (kinda bitter-sweet).

Anyway, the run again today was completed because of my accountability to my Active Rain Running Challenge partners.

It's never too late to join. www.activerain.com/group/runningchallenge

Workout 20 minutes a day for 3 days a week.

Hey, I have to join this group. I go to the gym everyday at 1pm and do 30 minutes on the treadmill and then 15 on the elliptical. I do this 5 days a week - schedule my appointments around because well, at my age we need to keep our bones good!!

Welcome Jo! We can use your inspiration and perseverance in the group. Five days a week! WOW - I'll have to work up to that.

Brian, sounds like we're on similar tracks, but you're running more.  My 8 month old daughter just finished her first round of swim lessons.

I'm having to find a new way to schedule the run, 'cause Seb's too taken by all the spring wildlife on our routes.  It's sprint-stop and sniff--walk--sprint and I can't do that.

So each morning it's an hour walk, and now I need to try and find the time to put in another run.

Matt - 8 months old and in swim lessons - great time to start. Tell Seb you just gotta run, no sniffin the flowers. walking is good too.

Brad - thank you. Gotta stay healthy! Thank you for all you do for us novice bloggers out here.

I'm average build and play Ice Hockey once a week, softball once a week. basketball pick-up games often and I enjoy bike riding.

Tried to get back into running late last year. Couldn't get going. Tired quickly, legs felt heavy got out of breath within 1st minute. Tried again a month ago and had same results.

Advice on getting going ?

i can easily click on "join group" but I want to mean it and commit for real.

John - sounds like you are very active and in situations to be healthy. Running is a great way to stay in shape for Ice Hockey, Softball, Basketball, and Bike Riding. In my opinion bike riding would be the equivalant of running.

Being out of breath is normal. In the first few minutes of the run you are in the anaerobic stage of your workout. Anaerobic means "without air". Kinda like a car engine warming up. Once you run for a few minutes your body will catch up and you'll be in the aerobic stage, meaning "with air". That's when your heart rate levels out and you catch your "second wind". I'm sure you have experience similar things in your other workouts.

Feel free to join the group. The important thing is to workout for at least 20 minutes, 3 x a week. If you can commit to that - join the group and we'll team up in shaping up. :)
